The Best Dog Food For A Healthy Happy Dog

If you want the best for your canine friend, a great place to start is by giving him the best dog food you can buy.

We've come a long way from feeding our dogs table scraps. Unfortunately, that's not necessarily a good thing. Dog food, and pet food in general, is big business. Which makes figuring out what's good for your dog quite challenging.

I'm by no means an expert when it comes to dog nutrition. And opinions vary greatly when you do research. So the information you'll find here is basically a summary of what I've found so far. Read it, see what interests you the most and then do some more in depth research if you like.

Raw Dog Food

Raw dog food is also known as BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food). You basically feed your dog raw meat and bones.

This certainly makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint, after all our dogs are still closely related to wolves. Unfortunately, feeding raw dog food isn't as simple as it sounds.

Wolves catch and eat a whole prey and can run free and look for whatever other food (vegetables, berries,...) their body needs. Our dogs are completely dependant on us for their dinner. Which means you'll need to make sure Fido is getting all the nutrients he needs to live a long, happy, healthy life. Throwing him a T-bone every day is not enough.

Make Your Own Dog Food

If BARF is not your cup of tea and you don't like commercial dog food, you could make your own dog food. Cooking a seperate meal for your furry friend can ensure he receives all the necessary nutrients to stay healthy.

Obviously, this takes a lot of extra work. It may not even be practical, especially if you work full time. If you have to choose between cooking for your dog or playing and interacting with your dog, I would personally choose the latter and feed my dog high quality commercial dog food. Which is exactly what I do.

Best Dry Dog Food

In my opinion, there is not one best dog food. Every dog is different. Some dogs thrive on one brand of kibble while others have problems digesting that same brand. A lot has to do with allergies.

There are a few things you need to look out for when selecting the best dry dog food for you pooch.
