Dog Sitters And The City

Dog sitters usually offer a variety of services.

Besides taking care of your dog, most will also take care of any other pets you have, getting the mail and newspaper, watering plants, turning lights on or off. Basically, they make sure your house looks as though it’s lived in when you’re away.

They are more than a dog walking service. Taking the dog out for a walk is only one of their chores. They will also spend some quality time with the dog in your home, usually petting, playing or grooming. They will also make sure your pooch is fed and has plenty of fresh drinking water. If your dog needs to take medication, be sure to ask the pet sitter in advance whether that poses any problems.

It’s a good idea to write down your dog’s habits and issues upfront (afraid of cars, aggressive towards dogs, unreliable off leash, medical issues,…). Although a good sitter should ask you these things during the first meeting.

Here are a few things to consider when looking for a pet sitter:

  • If you decide to hire a sitter who isn’t connected to a pet sitting service, make sure to ask for references and qualifications.
  • Don’t forget to ask about insurance. Accidents do happen, especially with dogs.
  • The contract should specify details such as services, price and time/duration of the visit.
  • Most pet sitters have a vet they work closely with. If you prefer the sitter takes your dog to your own vet in case of any problems, be sure to give him/her all the necessary details.
  • You might also ask whether there’s a backup service in case the sitter is ill.
