Natural Dog Flea Treatment Products That Works

The number 1 problem a lot of dog owners face is fleas. These days, dog flea treatment products come in a wide variety of forms. There are collars, sprays, shampoos, powders, zappers, combs and spot-on solutions.

Not all of these methods are as effective though. The most effective treatments are the ones that prevent the fleas from reproducing. After all, the quick and massive reproduction of fleas is what makes some dog flea treatment products so inefficient.

It’s also important to note that fleas prefer weaker, ill animals or young animals with weak immune systems. Keeping your dog healthy will go a long way in preventing a massive flea infestation.

If you prefer to use natural dog flea treatment products instead of the chemical ones most commonly used, there are a few solutions.

Dog flea comb

This can be a plastic or metal flea comb or if you like high-tech, an electric flea comb for dogs. You can find a regular dog flea comb at any pet store. A flea comb for dogs has very fine teeth which trap the eggs and fleas every time you run it through your dog’s fur.

An electric flea comb for dogs actually produces a small charge of electricity. It’s harmless to your dog, but kills the fleas on contact. The electric combs can produce a high pitched whine, so you might have to teach your dog it’s nothing to be afraid of. Reviews vary as to the success of these electronic flea combs.

Now you’re probably wondering how to use a flea comb? It’s very simple, it just takes quite a bit of time. The first thing you want to do is get a dish of soap water. Next, it’s important to know where to look for the fleas. They usually gather in the neck (between the shoulder blades) or the belly and lower back (especially around the tail area). Then simply run the comb through your dog’s fur. As soon as you’ve trapped some fleas or eggs between the teeth of the comb, dip in the soap water. This will kill the fleas after a little while. You will have to repeat this process over and over again. It’s rather unlikely you’ll kill every single flea this way, but the infestation should be significantly diminished.

Dog Flea Shampoo

Dog flea shampoo is a great way to complement the dog flea comb. Combining both methods should get rid of all fleas and eggs.

You can buy a commercial dog flea shampoo, or you could try Dawn dishwashing liquid. This will prevent your dog’s skin from drying out and the oils in the liquid will suffocate the fleas. It will also prevent the eggs from sticking to the hair.

If you’re a little squeamish when it comes to little bugs crawling around, I recommend you let someone else wash your dog. You see the fleas will swarm together on your dog’s face, even crawl in his nose and ears to get away from the water and shampoo. To prevent this as much as possible, it’s important to start washing your dog at the neck first. Do this quickly and then shampoo the rest of your dog. Some of the fleas will crawl around his eyes, do be careful though not to get any shampoo in them. Leave your dog shampooed like that for about 5 minutes to suffocate the fleas. Keep treats handy if you have to keep your dog calm. Most likely you’ll have to repeat this process at least once within a week to kill any remaining fleas.

Natural dog flea spray

The above methods work great as a natural dog flea treatment product, but what about preventing your dog to turn into the local flea Hilton?
You can use commercial products like Frontline, Stronghold,… or you can make your own, without chemicals and toxins. Here’s what you need:

  • 600ml warm water
  • 2 drops pure cedar wood essential oil
  • 2 drops pure lavender essential oil

Put this mix into a little spray bottle and shake it well. Next, spray the mix throughout your dog’s fur. Be careful around the eyes. The only drawback to this remedy is that it evaporates rather fast compared to a commercial dog flea spray. You’ll have to apply the oil mix regularly to be effective.
