Appearance
With its longer, silky coat, the papillon dog breed looks very classy and refined. The coat is always multicolored. The following colors are allowed by the breed standards: white with black, tan, red, lemon, brown, silver or sable. The official height and weight are 8 to 11 inches and 8 to 10 pounds. Which makes the papillon the perfect little dog for apartment dwellers.
Temperament
Don’t be fooled by his size. A papillon is a very lively dog who likes the outdoors. This doesn’t mean he’s not an apartment dog. Just make sure you take him outside for a daily walk or a romp in the dog park. You could also consider agility training as his very fast and extremely energetic for such a small dog. Even doggie dance is possible if you take his size in account. His very easy to train and has a great desire to please his owner. Great combination, especially if you’re not that patient. As the papillon dog breed thrives on affection and attention, you’ll need to teach it to stay alone as soon as you take it home. In combination with enough exercise, it shouldn’t be a problem to leave him alone when you’re out working. Provided he gets enough exercise, his a very calm and patient dog. Who loves to cuddle and give kisses. That includes any visitors to your home. He does have a tendency to bark too much. Especially when he hears something suspicious. So you might want to nip that in the bud at a young age. He can be stubborn at times, so it's important not to give him too many priviliges. And to be consistent. Especially when housetraining as this may take longer than average with some papillons.
Healthcare
Unless you love cleaning, you want to brush your papillon daily. Not because the coat needs it, but to remove the dead hairs before they end up all over your couch and floor.Because he's so small and has very delicate bones, you should keep a close eye on hime around large dogs and young children. Also try to prevent him from jumping down from high place.
Breed Background
The papillon dog breed was very popular with European nobles and royalty (like I said, it looks classy.) It actually got its name from the upright, furry ears; they look a bit like butterfly wings. It’s a very old dog breed, dating back to the 1300s.But the papillon wasn’t just popular for its size and looks. It was also used to catch rats and mice. Keep that in mind if you decide to let your pet mouse, rat or gerbil loose in the living room.
