manchester terrier dog breed

Appearance

The toy Manchester terrier dog breed has a short smooth coat. There is only one colour, namely black and tan. It’s a small, compact, agile little terrier with a long tapering head.It has small, almond shaped eyes and a black nose. The jaws should close in a scissors bite.

The short, whip tail and slightly arched back show its origin from the whippet.

There are actually 2 sizes: the standard and the toy Manchester terrier dog breed. In the toy breed, the ears must be naturally erect. In the standard breed the ears may be folded, pricked up or cropped (luckily more and more countries are forbidding cropping).

Toy breed height: 10-12 inches (25-30cm)Toy breed weight: 6-12 pounds (2,5-5kg)

Standard breed height: 15-16 inches (39-40cm)Standard breed weight: 18 pounds (8kg)

Temperament

The toy Manchester terrier dog breed is a very loyal and devoted breed. Very eager to please his owner, this little terrier is easy to train and housetrain. They can be quite determined and independent, so make sure you set some rules and stick to them so your dog knows who’s in charge. Be firm and positive and you’ll have an affectionate, energetic, well-balanced pet.

He loves to spend time with his family, which can lead to destructive behavior when left alone. Teach your small dog to stay home alone at a young age, and barking and chewing shouldn’t be a problem. Take him out for an exhausting walk before leaving him alone or give him something mentally stimulating to entertain himself alone. Also, don’t leave him out in the garden alone. These terriers tend to jump over or dig under a fence in no time.

Excessive barking is one of the problems you may face as they make excellent watchdogs. Nip this in the bud at an early age and you won’t have to worry about complaints from the neighbours.Other dogs shouldn’t pose any problems when socialized well. Small pets however can trigger this little terrier’s hunting instinct.

They’re very energetic, both inside and outside of the house. So take your pooch for long walks or find some other activity both of you can enjoy like, agility, frisbee, obedience, doggy dance, running next to your bike.

The toy Manchester terrier dog breed is great with children. Very patient and also protective, so be careful when the kids are playing a bit rough as your dog might try to break up the “fight” the doggy way (by biting or nipping). Teach your children how to behave around the dog as this breed tends to be rather dominant.

This breed needs an active, firm pack leader to prevent aggression, excessive barking, chewing and other destructive behavior.

Healthcare

Some of the toy Manchester terrier dog breed lines have a blood problem called glaucoma. Von Willebrand’s disease (bleeding disorder) is rare and wounds heal quickly.

Don’t leave your pooch out in the sun to long as heat bumps may surface along his back.

He’s a medium shedder, so if you want to ban all loose hair from your house you’ll need to brush him regularly with a rubber brush. The toy breed sheds less hair then the standard size. They prefer warmer weather, so you might want to consider buying a coat for your dog if you live in a colder climate.

Make sure the ear passages are clean (especially if your dog has folded ears) and keep the claws short.

Their life expectancy is 15 years or more.

Breed Background

Named after, surprise surprise, the Manchester district in England, it’s one of the oldest terrier breeds. It was developed in the 19th century by crossing a whippet with a rat-hunting terrier and was originally called the “black and tan” (no creative juices lost there). It was created to chase and hunt small animals.

The toy Manchester terrier dog breed became popular because Queen Victoria loved small dogs. Since then, the popularity of the breed has diminished.
